Housing market at a glance, November 2011
16.01.2012
The fourth Quarterly Report of the Federal Office for Housing FOH notes that were built in 2011 over 45,000 new homes. This is around 2,000 more than last year. In addition, the end of 2011 there were over 70,000 apartments under construction.
The vacancy rate over the whole of Switzerland with 0.94% is slightly higher than last year, but still keeps stable under 1%. Into 16 cantons, an increase of vacant dwellings are found in 10 cantons a decrease. The highest vacancy rate reaches Solothurn (2.09%) and the lowest 0.25% Geneva. Zurich is at 0.65% in sixth place and remains at a very good level. Nearly 12% of all vacancies in Switzerland concerning single-family homes, virtually the same number as last year.
The number of unoccupied new homes, however, rose within a year to around one-sixth. The low vacancy rates are due to the continued dynamic growth of the population back. The growth rate is now moving past three years consistently above 1%. The Federal Statistical Office FSO is assumed that the population will increase by 2035 in all cantons. Above-average increases are expected in the commercial cities of Zurich and Geneva.
